After an initial two years of planning and the complete refurbishment of an existing building – and an investment of more than a million dollars – Four Twenty Bank Dispensary and Lounge (Four Twenty Bank) has made an indelible mark in Palm Springs as it enters its second year in operation.

The 38,000-square-foot Four Twenty Bank is located in a former bank building that sat vacant for 32 years at the intersection of South Palm Canyon Drive and W. Baristo Road in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. The city of Palm Springs desired a thriving use for the long-shuttered prime space, and they definitely got what they wanted as business is booming at Four Twenty Bank.

Four Twenty Bank offers a wide range of products including a full assortment of sodas, cocktails, beer, and wine that contain zero alcohol and are CBD- and THC-infused. They carry top brands of cannabis like Jeeters and have a vast variety of prerolls, live resin, wax, oils, enriched lotions and creams, vape pens, and cartridges.

Owners Julie Montante and Nolan Moore had a vision to transform the building into a first-of-its-kind, world-class dispensary and lounge serving as a one-stop shop where people can choose to purchase from an extremely wide range of top-brand cannabis products of all types and then stay and hang out, relax, and enjoy what they bought and/or to enjoy live entertainment.

“Our goal has always been to create an elevated, elegant experience for our customers, so we have curated our space to enable them to have a mindful, enjoyable, and very safe experience,” Julie says. “We strongly believe in the positivity and benefits cannabis provides and we have created an environment where everyone from connoisseurs to the newly curious will feel welcomed and at home while just being themselves and enjoying the connection that cannabis brings.”

The décor of the lounge is plush and distinctive with several separate comfortable and stylish seating areas to enjoy throughout the facility. More distinctive design elements include three amazing, oversized crystal chandeliers that each contain more than 4,000 hanging crystals. A future amenity under consideration is the addition of private VIP suites on the second floor. The entire facility utilizes a custom filtration system that pulls fresh air into the building while withdrawing smoke and purifying it before it leaves through the vents.

Patrons can also play some complimentary games like billiards and large-format chess and there’s even an arcade located in the former bank vault – known as the “Game Vault” – featuring several old-school pinball machines, plus video games and air hockey.

But, wait, there’s more – a lot more. During the evening most every week, Four Twenty Bank delivers the kind of live entertainment that both locals and visitors really want to experience in town. Julie and Nolan engineered a way to enable the full first-floor space to be opened up for large crowds to take in live music from a wide range of well-known bands, including national, regional, and local acts with big followings. They did so by utilizing custom rolling point-of-sale product cases to make the space transformable for any given event.

There has been a variety of exceptional performers gracing the stage of Four Twenty Bank so far, including Missing Persons, Crazy Town, Aaron Lewis, Death From Above, the Dreamboats, Cottonmouth Kings, and many more. Berlin has a show coming up later in the spring, and The Motels, Mayhem and Jessica Von Rabbit are coming too.

“We’re having a lot of fun with the entertainment, including shows that have attracted upwards of 500 people,” Julie added. “We love to promote our local bands too.”

In terms of who the customers are, Julie notes, “It just depends on which day or night. For example, when it’s Village Fest on Thursday nights we have mostly visitors to the area. We get a lot of locals on the weekends; they have a tendency to stay away when it’s heavy tourist time. So, you know, it’s a good mixture.

During the day we get a lot of local employees when they get off of work. Many people have become like friends to us. They come in for a brief chat and to enjoy themselves, and then go home. I have people that come in actually sit down with their computers and start to do their work while they smoke a joint.

I think that people enjoy the fact that if they don’t have anything to do, they can come in. They can come and meet somebody else. You know, it’s like a release from their day-to-day work. Even if they don’t smoke, people come in and enjoy the place. So, it’s a little bit of everything.”

“The vision for our business was to create the ultimate cannabis and arts experience, and we’ve really done that in the heart of Palm Springs,” Julie added. “We wanted to make it the kind of place where customers could walk right into the on-site consumption lounge and be able to enjoy cannabis with like-minded individuals, often while enjoying high-quality entertainment in the form of concerts and open mic nights, and more. It’s truly a one-stop shop for all to enjoy.”

Julie got into the cannabis industry soon after her mother developed stage four breast cancer at the age of 45. She wanted to find alternatives to chemo, radiation, and surgery without stripping her of her dignity. This was the beginning of an extensive and compassionate journey for Julie and her brother Leonard to pursue their dream of helping others in need.

“I like it here in Palm Springs because I get to see a lot of the same people on a regular basis,” Julie says. “It’s just like a big family here. I like that aspect of it versus, you know, a big city where you may see somebody every once in a while. Everybody goes to the same events. It feels comfortable and safe.”

“So, I’m basically there to help people,” Julie added. “The industry has gotten tough right now with high taxes and oversaturation and the black market, so we’re just trying to do good things for people at fair pricing and just trying to keep the world going, trying to keep people medicated that need it. My favorite memories working at the dispensary are when people come in with ailments and we’re able to help them. We ease their pain and help them get off their pills. Our motto in business is to elevate. We elevate all of our customers and try to work with all of their essential needs,”

Considering the state of the cannabis industry in the Greater Palm Springs region, Julie says that the sector has become saturated, and she thinks it is likely to “hit some more rough times.” The city of Palm Springs has been very helpful all along the way. They work with us to make the best of the situation. They are working on the tax rates which would greatly help us and others making a go of it here. I enjoy working with the city.”

Clearly, Julie’s vision has taken shape at Four Twenty Bank with a very successful first two years in the books and many more to come.

Four Twenty Bank offers daily and weekly specials that can be found on their Instagram @fourtwentybank and menu. The sale of cannabis products stops at 10:00 p.m., but the facility can stay open later but can’t sell marijuana after 10:00 p.m.
