50-Year old Tamarisks in Palm Springs being removed

PALM SPRINGS – Controversial tamarisk trees started being removed near Tahquitz Creek Golf course by the city of Palm Springs on Tuesday. They have been deemed “Racist trees” by some, as it was believed that they were planted to block the view of the golf course from a historically black neighborhood. Mayor Robert Moon says that this is not the case, verifying that the trees were already there when the house they are near was built.

Neighbors helped the city remove the trees, and only 3 of 19 residents wanted to keep them. Residents have considered them a fire hazard

and complained of them dumping dry needles in their yards.

In all, it should take about a month to remove them all. They are all about 50 years old, so it is a tough job to make sure the root systems are eliminated as well. Homeowners will be able to enjoy the view once they are finally gone.
