“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19,” Trump tweeted. “We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”

Key Points

  1. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for coronavirus.
  2. Trump’s diagnosis of Covid-19 came two days after his first debate with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.
  3. Top Trump aide Hope Hicks tested positive shortly before Trump and the first lady.

“The President takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously,” White House spokesperson Judd Deere said in a statement on Thursday.

“White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling.”

In a memo issued to reporters just before 10p.m. Pacific Time, the President’s physician, Navy Commander Dr. Sean Conley, wrote he received confirmation of the positive tests on Thursday evening.

I release the following information with the permission of President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

“This evening I received confirmation that both President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.”

“The President and First Lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence.” Conley wrote

“The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions.”

“Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments.”

The President had said late Thursday night that he planned to quarantine after one of his closest aides, Hope Hicks tested positive for the infection.

Trump is now the most prominent political figure to come down with Covid-19. Previously, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro had tested positive for coronavirus and recovered.
