Veterans Day 2021 in the Palm Springs area: A parade and other ways to honor those who served

Veterans Day will be marked Thursday with events across the Coachella Valley. After a year in which some gatherings like the Palm Springs Veterans Day parade were canceled or scaled back due to COVID-19, many traditional commemorations are on again this year. Honor and celebrate those who have served with these local activities:

City of Palm Springs Veterans Day parade

When: 3:30 p.m., Thursday

Where: Downtown Palm Springs. The parade starts on Palm Canyon Drive at Ramon Road and ends at Alejo Road.

The City of Palm Springs invites residents and visitors to the 24th annual Veterans Day parade being held in downtown Palm Springs on Thursday. The parade will conclude with a patriotic concert by the Palm Springs High School Spirit of the Sands Band and with a fireworks show finale at the intersection of Amado Road and Palm Canyon Road. The city is proud of being nationally recognized by the Veterans Day National Committee of the Department of Veteran Affairs as a Regional Site for the observance of Veterans Day.

Veterans Day at the General Patton Memorial Museum

When: 11 a.m., Thursday

Where: 62-510 Chiriaco Road, Chiriaco Summit

Cost: Free

Join the General Patton Museum in Chiriaco Summit this Veterans Day as it honors first responders and those who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Enjoy a fly-over by the Palm Springs Air Museum and observe the unveiling of bricks honoring the 13 U.S. service members killed in Kabul, Afghanistan, this year.

Free admission and fishing at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park

When: 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday

Where: 58075 Jefferson Street, La Quinta

Cost: Free admission for active duty military personnel, veterans of the U.S. armed forces, National Guard, federal and state reservists, and their guests. Admission for the general public is $20 per vehicle.

Lake Cahuilla is stocked with channel catfish, largemouth bass, striped bass, carp, bluegill and some rainbow trout. To qualify, veterans need to present valid proof of military service, and those fishing need a state fishing license, required for anyone 16 and older. The state fishing license is not sold at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park, but can be purchased at retailers.

La Quinta Veterans Day recognition ceremony

When: 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday

The City of La Quinta will be live-streaming its Veterans Day program on Facebook, featuring musical performances and the veteran acknowledgment panel. The Veteran Recognition Program collects, preserves, and recognizes the sacrifice and valiant efforts of American military service members by engraving their name, rank, and years of service onto the Veterans Acknowledgement Sculpture in the La Quinta Civic Center Campus.

Warrior Rising golf & banquet

When: Starting 6 p.m. Thursday and continuing Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: 75-200 Classic Club Boulevard, Palm Desert

Cost: Single-golfer ticket $275. General ticket $500. VIP Banquet table tickets ranging up to $10,000.

Join Warrior Rising at the Palm Desert Classic Club for the Warrior Golf Tournament & Banquet benefiting veteran entrepreneurs. The event will include a VIP reception, banquet & auction, and guest speaker Navy Seal Robert O’Neill before the golf tournament and 19th hole awards ceremony.

American Veterans (AMVETS) Post 66 and Veterans For Peace (VFP) honor fallen Marine Corps Corporal Hunter Lopez

When: 11 a.m, Thursday

Where: Shea’s Veterans Center, 13630 Mountain View, Desert Hot Springs CA

Cost: Free

American Veterans (AMVETS) Post 66 and Veterans For Peace (VFP) will dedicate a Peace Pole and a bronze plaque on Thursday. The Peace Pole and plaque are dedicated to the memory of fallen Marine Corps Corporal Hunter Lopez who was on a humanitarian mission to secure Kabul Afghanistan Airport on August 26. Hunter was a graduate of La Quinta High School.

Indian Wells

When: 10 a.m, Thursday

Where: Indian Wells Veterans memorial and City Hall, 44-950 El Dorado Drive, Indian Wells, CA 92210

Cost: Free

The city of Indian Wells will be holding a ceremony with light refreshments in honor of our veterans.

Palm Desert

When: Starting 9 a.m to 7 p.m, Tuesday and Wednesday and continuing to 11 a.m Thursday.

A Gratitude Wall will be on display in Civic Center Park for community members to bring their own marker and write a thank you message to our veterans or simply sign their name on the wall. In addition, Palm Desert will be holding a virtual ceremony on Thursday featuring a keynote speaker from the 7th Marine Regiment at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, as well as a patriotic concert performance and will conclude with a round-up of resources of local veteran services and resource organizations.

Additional treats for service members and their families

Starbucks: Starbucks will be honoring veterans, military service members and military spouses with a free tall (12-ounce) hot coffee on Thursday nationwide.

Sports Clips: Sport Clips, a veteran-founded company, will provide free haircuts to veterans and active duty service members with military ID on Thursday, as well as donate $2 for every haircut service provided on Veterans Day towards their “Help a Hero” scholarship program, which provides scholarships for service members and veterans for use at post-secondary schools and trade schools.
