The 65th edition of the The American Express Golf Tournament

PHOTO: Happening Now in the Coachella Valley – The 65th edition of the The American Express Golf Tournament festivities, January l 15 -21, continued with Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No.1 player joining us for an early morning Press Conference, as he prepares for tournament play tomorrow.

The PGA Tour comes to California for The American Express, which is held across three different courses in La Quinta, California. The full-field event features some big names and young talent, with 22 of the top 50 players in the world rankings getting set to tee it up beginning on Thursday.

The total 2024 American Express purse is $8.4 million with the winner’s share coming in at $1.512 million.

Golfers will play each course over the first three rounds. There is a 54-hole cut, giving the remaining low 65 and ties a chance to compete for the title at the host Stadium Course. Scottie Scheffler is the +550 favorite (risk $100 to win $550) in the 2024 American Express odds, while Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are both 9-1.

Scheffler starts Round 1, tomorrow at La Quinta Country Club. Players play three distinct courses before finishing the champion’s round on PGA West’s Stadium Course, Sunday, January 21st.

Q.  This is the fifth straight year you’ve been here. You’ve had a couple of pretty good finishes, is it just that the weather’s good the courses are in great shape or is there something about these courses that fits you? tee, all that stuff disappears?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER:  Well, I played here my rookie year.  I started here instead of Sony.  I wasn’t in Kapalua my rookie year, so I decided to start here.  I really enjoyed coming here and just playing some golf.  It’s a great place to practice and prepare.  The event’s fun.  The pro-am aspect is fun.  I’ve had some good partners over the years that I’ve enjoyed playing with.  It’s just a fun event for us to come play and compete.  The golf courses are always in great shape.  The weather’s typically pretty good.  It’s a fun week to start the year.

The American Express, which annually tees up the start of the PGA TOUR’s West Coast swing and is the TOUR’s first 2024 regular season event in the continental United States, will showcase 156 professional golfers and 156 amateurs playing at PGA WEST’s Stadium Course (host course) and Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, Calif

Today, a part of the week long activities, was Wednesday’s, 1 day Pro Am, just before the main tournament played on the PGA Stadium Course. The course was a buzz as was the Driving range outfitted with some very cool trackman technology where every ball in the practice area is tracked realtime and monitors right there next to you.
