The 26-foot-tall rendering of Marilyn Monroe, a tribute to her famous scene in 1955’s “The Seven Year Itch.” Formerly in Chicago; then Palm Springs, California; then Trenton, New Jersey; then someplace in Australia is on it’s way back to Palm Springs for good in 2020.
KESQ confirmed the news of it’s return, but not the time or location, via their website today:
Councilmember J.R. Roberts confirmed the news this afternoon. He said the city is still working on a date and location for the 26-foot-high, 34,300-pound painted metal statue.
“Forever Marilyn” was constructed in 2011 by sculptor Seward Johnson, who has a knack for turning American iconography into giant-sized replications. THE “Forever Marilyn” is part of Johnson’s “Icons Revisited” series and is made of bronze and stainless steel.
The “Forever Marilyn” statue, made its home in Palm Springs at the corner of Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Way from 2012 to 2014.
The statue has been mocked by art critics and casual onlookers; VirtualTourist named it as one of the worst pieces of public art in America.
But a lot of people also like taking pictures with it. As such, the statue has been shipped around to different cities to catch the gaze of curious onlookers.
Formerly in Chicago, IL; Palm Springs, CA; and Trenton, NJ. Currently awaiting reassembly.
Status: In Transition back to Palm Springs, California!
