Publisher CoachellaValley July 14, 2025This preserved skull of a Ovis canadensis nelsoni, aka the peninsular bighorn sheep, was found and left intact in Eagle Canyon in 2022 for biologists to retrieve and catalog.

It was removed before they could do so. Once roaming North America by the millions, the total population dropped precipitously until the animal was listed on the Endangered Species List in 1998.
The Bighorn Institute in Coachella Valley tracks three local herds comprising 270 sheep. Challenges in their preservation include disease, traffic and habitat fragmentation.
Bighorn Sheep Emergency
In the event of a bighorn sheep emergency, the Bighorn Institute recommends calling them at 760-346-7334, or Erin Schaeffer at California Fish and Wildlife at 760-628-4022.
The institute reminds the public that, “Peninsular bighorn sheep are an endangered species and it is against the law to handle or harass them without proper permits, even if it is for the benefit of the sheep.”

Watch Now Live- Happening Tonight – Palm Springs VillageFest, the City’s wildly popular street fair which prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, was held every Thursday night in downtown, will return on Thursday, July 1. Coachella Valley!
With COVID-19 cases significantly down, the City Council approved re-opening VillageFest at their last night meeting, with a smaller footprint and safety protocols in place. The street fair is expected to expand to its original length in the coming months. During the summer, VillageFest hours of operation will be 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.
