Life has a funny way of taking shape in ways you least expect.  Rachel Lewis has always had a creative flair and passion for the arts.  Whether dance or painting, she says, “Art was my outlet.”

A few years ago, Lewis was diagnosed with lyme disease, affecting the use of her hands.  She explains, “I didn’t know how much longer I was going to live. I wanted to do something as long as I would be alive…make a difference.  Fashion became that for me.”  While struggling to manage her debilitating illness, Lewis graduated from the International Academy of Design and Technology, Sacramento.  However, she asserts that when “western medicine gave up on me, I decided to go to Peru to get well.”

In Peru, Lewis learned the art of Andean weaving and grew to love the knit materials hand crafted by the local women of the village.  She was inspired by the beautiful textiles and states, “I was able to get healthy …I’m actually much better now. I look forward to now using fashion as a platform for lyme disease awareness. I’m also hoping I can support the Peruvian women by ordering their fabrics.  It’s important for me to spread the love a little bit by giving back and supporting people in different countries that are very poor.”

Design Philosophy:

“A garment can change the attitude of the person wearing it. My goal is to change the way a woman feels about herself with designs that empower women to be individual, unique, and comfortable.”

“I’m applying to ‘Project Runway’”

Creative Influence:

“Miu, Miu and Alexander McQueen…I’m drawn to different brands that aren’t afraid to be uniquely individual and make people feel something.”

Future goals:

  • “I’m applying to ‘Project Runway’”
  • “Now that I am healthy enough to start producing my line, I’d like get it into boutiques as well as get my e-commerce site up and running.”

Lewis wowed crowds at SAC Fashion Week 2016 with her fun and flirty Spring/Summer collection…a well-edited clothing line styled to perfectly capture the spirit of her “feel good” aesthetic.

Her models took to the catwalk, in festive make-up, hair and accessories, dancing to the upbeat music of Enrique Iglesias.  “This particular song,  “El Perdon”, Lewis reflects, “was in all of taxis when I arrived in Peru.  It played all over and I love it .

The better I felt, the more I danced to that song.  For this collection, I really felt that it was very important to bring every aspect of my love of life and fashion into the details to make the show cohesive.”

Using Peruvian woven fabrics made of alpaca yarn and naturally dyed, the garment pieces effortlessly draped the models for a fresh take on breathable, bright, imaginative apparel. According to Lewis, “The designs and inspiration really came from life. Lots of color and movement.  I am alive and I want to show that on the runway. This particular Spring/Summer collection is about feeling sexy, happy, and alive.”
