Martha’s Village & Kitchen (MVK) is proud to celebrate 28 years of service on April 10, 2018. On this day, the agency reaches the 28-year milestone of providing life-changing programs. These programs address the needs of the most vulnerable in The Valley.  MVK began in 1990 when the founders served meals to their homeless neighbors with a donation of $5.00. The organization has come a long way since those humble beginnings! It has grown to be one of the largest providers of homeless services in the Coachella Valley. Each year, MVK serves over 6000 people each year from its campus in Indio, CA. Martha’s Village & Kitchen is so much more than a soup kitchen or homeless shelter.

What They Do

MVK serves almost a quarter of a million meals each year. It has the capacity to house 120 homeless children, women and men each night in the Residential Program.  Martha’s Village & Kitchen’s clients come from all walks of life. No two families or individuals are the same. Seniors on fixed incomes, those experiencing the loss of a job, the loss of a home, overwhelming medical expenses and fleeing domestic violence are among the thousands of people who seek Martha’s help each year. Also worth noting is Martha’s Village & Kitchen works hand in hand with other Valley agencies to ensure that those in need receive services.

To help transform the lives of the impoverished, MVK operates a variety of programs and services. Among these life-changing resources are: Food Services[1], Housing, Children’s Services, Career and Education, individualized Case Management and Emergency Assistance. Through these programs, many find hope and the strength to regain their lives by becoming responsible and productive citizens. The services they provide go far above and beyond a typical homeless shelter model.  In addition, Martha’s Village & Kitchen has earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar.  GuideStar is the world’s largest source of nonprofit information. The Future

For the next 28 years and beyond, Martha’s Village & Kitchen is committed to providing hunger relief in the community. Toward that end, the agency is launching a $5 million campaign, “MVK: Renewing Hope, Rebuilding Lives.” The campaign’s objectives fall into four major categories: Child Development, Food Services, Culinary/Job Training Program, and Building and Shelter Space Improvements and Safety Upgrades. The campaign will help to meet the needs and change lives right now and in the future. Also, more children will grow up healthier in mind and body, better able to take on the responsibilities of adulthood. The impact will be felt throughout the Valley as together, we create a healthy and prosperous community that provides benefits to all its citizens.
