There are numerous amazing organizations working hard to lower the rate of euthanized pets in our community. People looking to adopt a new cat or dog, can work with these agencies to ensure that their new furry friend will fit with the needs of their family and home. Age, weight, size and temperament are just a few of the criteria that families can specify when adopting their new family member.

Even if you are not currently looking to add a new furry friend to your household, there are numerous other ways to help out. Other than making the obvious monetary donation, both children and adults can volunteer their time and efforts with tasks that range from anywhere to cat cuddling and dog walking to fundraising.
There are countless therapeutic benefits gifted to humans by these animals and what better way for families and communities to come together to help the lives of these lovable pets in need?
Even families looking for a specific breed or type of dog, can access numerous organizations/websites that deal specifically with the adoption of certain breeds.
By using one of these organizations to adopt your pet, you are not only going to save yourself money, but you are also helping to save an animal that is already in need of a home.

A Few Statistics….
Although currently there is not a government institution responsible for tabulating national statistics for the animal protection movement, the ASPCA has worked hard to provide the below national estimates
https://www.aspca.org/animal-homelessness/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics[7]
Every year approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter a U.S. animal shelter. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats).
Approximately 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year (1.6 million dogs and 1.6 million cats).
Approximately 710,000 animals entering US shelters as strays are returned to their owners. Of this number, 620,000 are dogs and only 90,000 are cats.
According to the American Pets Product Association (APPA), these are the most common sources from which primary methods cats and dogs are obtained as pets in the United States.
