Downtown Palm Springs Redevelopment Project signs first major tenant, construction to begin in a little more than a week.
Above-ground construction at the 14-acre site nearby where Marilyn Statue once stood is expected to start by March 1. Walls should be seen rising above the surrounding fence about two months later.
West Elm (subsidiary of Williams-Sonoma) is the first tenant to commit to the redevelopment project located in the epicenter of the city’s newly revitalized downtown on North Palm Canyon Drive,
Thursday, during the annual State of City speech, Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet announced the store’s plans and also announced that Palm Springs will unveil a new 9/11 memorial, including a piece of metal from the World Trade Center.
The Kimpton Hotel is slated to open early 2016 at the project site. Officials at Kimpton released a statement earlier that stated the new construction, luxury hotel will feature 190 rooms and a lively rooftop bar and pool – the first of its kind for Palm Springs.
The hotel will also offer a chef-driven, destination restaurant and more than 24,000 square feet total event and meeting space, as well as picturesque views of the Mount San Jacinto State Park.
