Coachella officials are looking to break into the tourism industry with the development of a Hollywood-style theme park along Interstate 10.
The proposed “Return To Aztlan” park includes a 200-foot pyramid, 10,000-person concert plaza, 12-screen movie theater, rides, a river walk, hotel, restaurants and stores.
Aztlán Development, the Palm Springs-based group behind the idea, also wants to build a movie studio and sound stage in order to encourage film production in the east valley.
Coachella leaders are expected to discuss the plans Thursday.
“We are hopeful that this project comes to fruition, just because of the economic impact it would have, including the hiring of local individuals,” Mayor Pro Tem Manuel Pérez said.
Aztlan Development has not submitted a formal request to the city’s planning commission, only conceptual plans and renderings.
The theme park is proposed for a site along the highway, on Vista Del Norte, near Fantasy Springs Resort Casino and Spotlight 29 Casino.
