I consider myself somewhat spa aficionado.  In fact, in my travels, I make it a point to explore different spas in well-known resort destinations around the US, Hawaii, and Baja Mexico.

On first approach to the Sunstone Spa at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa, right here in the Coachella Valley, I know I’ve stumbled upon a different type of desert spa experience. All spas offer their own flavor and ambiance; however, this particular desert enclave has set itself apart.

While close enough for resort guests to access on property, Sunstone Spa poses a distinguished stature with an impressive separate entrance opposite the bustling casino.  Guests enter through the Sunstone door and step into a serene environment that at once encourages all five senses to find calm, take in the beauty of the surroundings, relax, and yes, smell and taste the trappings of the one of the finest day spa destinations in the Coachella Valley. 

Upon arrival, the impeccably gracious staff introduces you to their world away and happily escorts you on a tour of the facility. The term facility seems too strong a word for this soothing oasis that takes you on a peaceful journey toward bliss.  Immediately, the size and grand scale of this contemporary palace takes your breath away.  The space allows you to feel you have escaped for your own time and the presence of others melts away.  The overall design is welcoming and gives tribute to all of nature’s elements.  Invoking the roots of wellness with the alignment of earth, wind, fire and water…the spa has taken pieces of each to represent a mind, body and spiritual cleansing.

The interior palette is inspired by natural earth tones with colors of stone, sand, blues, and pearl mingling to flow symbiotically from room to room and pleasing the eye.  Soft “candlelit” lighting, sumptuous leather chairs, pristine lockers, showers, and baths invite guests to sink in, soak in, and enjoy this exclusively private and peaceful haven.  Every detail and modern amenity has been carefully thought out and attentive staff seems ready to cater to your every need without invading your space.

There are 11 individual treatment rooms to experience some of the most interesting and innovative practices. The menu of services is astounding showcasing seasonal as well as special occasion specials that involve massage, scrubs, facials, and body skincare, many of which can be customized.  The combination Neck, Back Shoulder massage with the Turquoise Sage Salt Scrub left me glowing from head to toe.  Aromatic sage, lavender and mint infused with mineral rich salts and arnica oil were just the organic elements to polish and hydrate my tired skin and joints.  Applied by expert technicians , the experience was pure heaven.

The trip to the eucalyptus steam room, dry sauna, and whirlpools is an indulgent place to unwind.  And should you choose bathe sans clothing…the staff has a healthy approach to accommodating this request.  As I mentioned, every detail has been well planned.

Extreme pampering and customer service reigns mighty here at Sunstone Spa.  In the well-appointed lounge, a fresh fruit plate and gourmet, herb, infused tea await to ease you into your day.  I tried the White Ginger Pear to as I gazed at magazines and wrapped myself in a warm chenille throw to warm my spirit and further distract myself from perusing the exquisitely prepared spa menu.

During your stay, food and beverage may be ordered from the Waters Café with specialty delicacies and cocktails such as the Spa Tini to savor.  A variety of salads as well as more hearty quesadillas and burgers will renew your energy.

Food is served poolside in the Spa’s private pool reserve that continues the mood music for a complete indoor/outdoor experience.  Access to the private pools and patios further add to the restoration of the mind, body, and soul as you take in the fresh air and open skies in a tranquil setting that quietly maintains a sense of anonymity. 

Private outdoor cabanas are also available adjacent to the pool area complete with televisions, refrigerators, and Jacuzzi.  Perfect for couples or a larger party to congregate between services when not resting in the separate male and female lounge areas within the spa. There is also a coed lounge within the spa to mingle with your significant other during your stay.

After your treatment take a soak in the heated pool and check out the Salon for an array of mani-pedis, hair styling, and makeup service. Then head to the Bliss Beauty Bar located in the amply stocked boutique which has sophisticated brans as well as chic choices in clothing, jewelry, beauty basics, luxury skincare lines and more.. State of the art technology is used via wellness APP to create custom fragrances and lotions …the perfect gift or souvenir to take home.
