Preserving Chino Canyon

Preserving Chino Canyon

The Friends of the Palm Springs Mountains (Friends) has been working for many years to preserve the critical habitat and scenic open space area at the entry to Palm Springs known as the Chino Cone. At the heart of the Cone is Chino Canyon, which we are now in a position to purchase and preserve in perpetuity. With a willing seller and funding available through various resources, this long awaited dream has reached the point of finally coming to fruition.

Preserving Chino Canyon will not only preserve an important and scenic habitat area, it will also enhance public access to and enjoyment of the natural environment, and enhance opportunities for both tourism and the promotion of a healthy and active lifestyle for residents and tourists alike. Our goals include plans to expand public access, while preserving the habitat, and create educational and recreational amenities, including a natural park and preserve, scenic overlooks, interpretation, and trails.

Critical Wildlife Habitat

For many years there was numerous development proposals planned in the upper canyon, which threatened the critical crossing point of the endangered bighorn sheep, along with the many other species who call Chino Canyon their home.

Spectacular Views

Chino Canyon is visible from sites all across the Coachella Valley. Over 400,000 annual visitors enjoy the isolated wilderness of the Canyon as part of the Palm Springs Aerial Tram experience. The Tram ride provides an amazing perspective of the wide-open natural spaces of the alluvial fan and canyon. Our plan supports the continued enjoyment of the Tram experience by preserving much of the Canyon’s natural open space and encouraging interpretive centers, hiking trails, and other recreational amenities to create a richer visitor experience.

Historic Architecture

At the base of the fan sits the mid-century modern Palm Springs Visitors Center designed by noted architects Albert Frey and Robson Chambers. Our plan calls for enriching the Visitor Center experience with educational facilities and visitor features that enhance the Canyon experience, without compromising existing views.
