The 15th Annual Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale Opening Night Preview Gala enchanted with an evening to delight with one of its largest ever exhibits of fine art and collectibles celebrating mid-century modern designs.
Serious collectors, mid-century modern enthusiasts, and antique aficionados gathered to get first glimpse at this year’s mod trends and find famous treasures from yester year. The party kicked off the four day shopping extravaganza with guests sipping wine, noshing on passed hors d’euvres, and roaming the Palm Springs Convention Center to the smooth sounds of live musical entertainment.
The opening night event had many guests sporting mid-century fashions giving tribute to Palm Springs vintage chic in keeping with the evening’s beneficiary and theme…Modernism Week. As guests took advantage of the complimentary valet parking, one could not help but notice the attention given to the assemblage of high style. While “what to wear” was not the focus of the evening, it certainly made for a festive atmosphere.
The sophisticated gallery installations highlighted world-class mid-century furniture, jewelry, art and objects, photos, vintage prints and unique collectibles. The aesthetic of each vendor varied but the attractive displays lured curious fans to look for more. Vendors were eager to share their stories about their particular designer items with many museum quality products and antiques for sale to lucky patrons. Metallic accents, contemporary lighting fixtures, streamlined furnishings, and kitsch items mixed together to create “cool” environments.
The Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale runs the 13th-16th and if you have time to attend…rush on over. It’s worth the tour. Might we recommend:
Take a moment to enjoy the vintage travel trailer parked at the entrance to the PS Convention Center. The silver bullet styled trailer is staged with décor reflective of the era, and for this writer, brings to mind thoughts of Lucy and Ricky Riccardo (characters of mid-century I Love Lucy television fame) camping at Joshua Tree. Fun, fun, fun.
Check out Palm Springs own purveyors of 20th Century antiques and decorative arts, Porter & Plunk’s exhibit…Exquisitely elegant with white monochromatic elements and beautiful details such as the furnishings by designer Edward J. Spence.
You can also purchase at their online store: www.porterandplunk.com
Don’t miss the opportunity to view Limited Runs national touring exhibit titled, “Marilyn: The Lost Photographs of a Hollywood Star”. This fantastic collection includes many “never before seen” prints showing the many faces of Marilyn.
Modernism Week continues through February 22nd featuring over 100 events to share your affinity for mid-mod madness. Home tours, films, lectures, parties, walking, bus and bike tours abound to celebrate one of the finest festivals for admiring architectural wonders, fabulous fashions, and daring designs.
